Hi All,
Hope everyone is able to get some much needed rest today! I have to say I was so proud of all of our skaters yesterday! They all did an absolutely AMAZING job!!! I truly witnessed some of the BEST skating I have ever seen from our kids! We have great kids!!!

And let me also say THANK YOU to everyone. I would mention names, but I would end up forgetting someone and the reality is we could not have made the Competition go without the assistance of everyone involved, siblings of skaters included.

I don’t have much else for you today. I just wanted to touch base and say thank you for all of your hard work, for supporting our skaters and for having such wonderfully talented and amazing kids!

See you at the rink.

Last year FSCB brought in Kim Berry, a skating coach from Colorado, to help with choreographing programs for club members. Although we have been working for months to get her back to Billings it has come together last minute. Kim is flying into Billings tonight to work with skaters on Friday, November 30th. If you are interested in having Kim work with your skater please contact Cathy Swandal 208-7757.

Every January, U.S. Figure Skating hosts National Skating Month with rinks, clubs and skaters participating in all kinds of events to attract new families to the wonderful world of skating. This year we are holding the Second Annual National Skating Month video contest for skaters who have passed their pre-preliminary, preliminary or pre-juvenile moves in the field or free skate test January 1st, 2012 or later. We are also inviting all beginner and preliminary synchronized skating teams to participate.

We invite you, or your team, to submit a 30 second (or less) video stating why you love figure skating before December 14th, 2012. The top video in each category will be selected as winners and will receive a U.S. Figure Skating prize pack along with having their video featured during the 2013 Prudential U.S. Figure Skating Championships in January. The winning videos will also be distributed to all member clubs, rinks and basic skills programs participating in National Skating Month to use during their events.

Lisa Grasso-Hartly is excited to take this project on!!!  Thanks Lisa!  Now all we need are for those eligible skaters [skaters who have passed their pre-preliminary, preliminary or pre-juvenile moves in the field or free skate test by January 1st, 2012 or later]  who are interested in being a part of the video to meet with Lisa for about 5 minutes, some time between now and next Thursday, (December 6) and provide an answer to the question:

“Why you love figure skating”You don’t have to make an appointment, just have your skater approach Lisa at the rink and she will get them on “film”. 🙂

November 20, 2012

Thanks everyone for making an effort to skate tonight at the rink! It was fun to see 14 FSCB skaters on the ice. Q2 will be airing the figure skating segment on Sunday, November 25th at 5:30 pm and 10:00 pm. Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

November 19, 2012

Hi Everyone,

Just an FYI, the FSCB group number for the Helena show has been cancelled due to a lack of interest.

However, hopefully your skater will be excited about the opportunity for a group number at the December 15, Centennial Ice Arena Christmas Show.  Some of our skaters are getting ready to perform solo programs, but for those interested we would also like to offer the opportunity for a group number.  Please respond by Wednesday, November 28, if this sounds like something your skater is interested in and you can commit to the show to be performed on December 15.  Let’s make this an opportunity for our skaters to show off all of their hard work and hopefully spark some interest in those Learn to Skate participants to come and join the club!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Cathy Swandal, Skater Mom

November 18, 2012

Hi Everyone,

At the request of a couple of our figure skaters, I set up the Celebrating Home fundraiser again this season.  If you would like to participate, please let me know and I will sign your skater up as a participant.  You can then send out e-mails to friends and family who can in turn order items and have them shipped directly to them.  If you would like to do things the old-fashion way, I will have brochures and order forms available as well.

 Thanks, Cathy Swandal, Skater Mom

November 16,2012

Hi Everyone, Just a follow up to find out who is committing to the “Christmas Around the World” show on December 8, 2012,  1-3 p.m. in Helena, MT.  The clock is ticking and Lisa needs to know who definitely plans on participating in the show.  Lisa is thinking (as long as there are no objections) that she could use the Nov. 29, club ice session for those interested, to get everyone comfortable with their part.  You would then be able to practice it a couple of times on the following club ice session Dec. 6, prior to the show on Dec. 8.  Please let Lisa know as soon as possible if your skater will be participating so she can work on choreographing a part for them prior to practice on Nov. 29.

Please reply to Lisa @ by 12 noon, tomorrow, November 17, to confirm whether or not you will be participating in the show (the show programs are being printed and we want to make sure everyone skating is included in the “official” program Open-mouth smile).
The following skaters expressed an interest in participating:
Katelyn H.
Toryn M.
Kaylin M.
Kaitlyn C.
Remember, there is no club ice next week due to Thanksgiving.  Enjoy your time with friends and family and we will see you the following Thursday, Nov. 29, 4:30-5:15 p.m.

Thanks, Cathy Swandal, Skater Mom

November 9, 2012

A shout out to Zac Hagen who is competing at Sectionals in Provo, Utah this weekend.  Have fun, skate hard and travel safe!

November 4,2012

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you
Thanks to all of the kids who were out on the ice for the debut of “Synchro” yesterday!  There were nine skaters on the ice for this first session of synchro.  They were fun to watch and looked like they were having fun as well. Party smile  The plan is to have a couple more free “try it” sessions of synchro on the next two Thursday Club Ice dates (same time 4:15-4:30’ish), see who is interested in forming a team and go from there.  Thanks to Jordan for getting this program up and running!

For all who are interested, there will be a Holiday show in Helena on December 8, 1-3 p.m.  This production by the Helena Figure Skating Club, gives those from FSCB the opportunity to skate in a group number in a show themed, “Christmas Around the World”.  The length of the group number will be 2 1/2 – 3 minutes and will be choreographed by Lisa Marie Grasso-Hartly.  Each skater will have a piece in the number that is choreographed to their skill level. Lisa is planning on having 3 practices in total prior to the show.  If you are interested in this opportunity please contact Lisa Marie Grasso-Hartly at or talk to her when you see her at the rink.  You don’t have to decide immediately, but please let her know by the week of November 12, if you are interested.

Centennial Ice Arena Christmas Show
Another opportunity to let your skater shine.  December 15, Centennial Ice Arena will be having their Christmas show to showcase the Learn to Skate participants for the current session.  They have also invited FSCB skaters to skate an exhibition program during this show.  If you and your skater are interested, please let your child’s coach know so that you can be working on a number for this program.  Also, if you would let Lisa Marie Grasso-Hartly know that your child is participating and their choice of music, that would be great!  Lisa –

I think that is all that I have for now.
Have a great weekend!

SEPTEMBER 29, 2012

This weekend is Northwest Regional Championships in Eugene, Oregon. Skating in Eugene will be Zac Hagan, Kyla Jewell and Kim Van Atta. Good luck and best wishes!

Kim Van Atta, Lisa Marie Grasso-Hartly (coach) and Zac Hagan

SEPTEMBER 24, 2012

There is a change in the Club ice dates. We added October 25th and cancelled April 18th Club ice.

SEPTEMBER 11, 2012

Ice is coming on Monday, September 17! Yippee! According to Chandra at Centennial Arena ice is being made and OFS will start on Monday. OFS times and days for the remainder of September are as follows:

September 17-20, (Mon-Thurs) 4:30 – 5:30

September 24, 26 and 27 (Mon, Wed, Thurs) 4:30 – 5:30

September 25 (Tues) 4:00 – 5:00

See you at the rink!

The season is getting off to a late start, but we hope it will be a good one none-the-less. The last update we received from Centennial Ice Arena is that the needed compressor part is in and they are working hard to get ice in this weekend. We haven’t gotten word if the work is on schedule, but we will keep you posted. You can also find the latest information on Centennial’s website.

On October 4th, we will be throwing a Club Party to kick-off the season. Please join us at 5:30, immediately following OFS, for dinner and club business. We hope to register or renew all skaters with FSCB and USFSA, discuss fund-raising opportunities, National Ice Skating month, pre-order club t-shirts, and vote on new club by-laws. As you can see we have a lot to cover, so please plan on attending and being at the arena for at least an hour and a half. Also, look for a packet in the mail from the club in the next few weeks. It will contain the proposed new by-laws for the club. Please look over the new by-laws and come with any questions or comments. Keep in mind the new by-laws are from USFSA and adopting them will help us in transitioning to non-profit status, our ultimate goal. WE NEED FULL ATTENDANCE TO GET THE JOB DONE! So, please save the date!

Thanks and we look forward to seeing you all this season.
